THINKS MOTOROLA TAKES BEST OF SHOW
POSTED BY DAN YOUNG
Motorola started 2011 off right. First they split into two companies, spinning off their enterprise data collection business. Next they released a slew of new products, the Xoom tablet being the favorite. With its release, Motorola has a product that should gain serious market share. Of all the devices at this year's Mobile World Congress, it was the winner.
Device manufacturers had quite a bit to present. Samsung has their Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S II; the S II is really a nice handheld. LG has their 3D Android devices which do not require the glasses to use it. They also have a tablet running Android that was not well designed. HP and RIM have their proprietary tablets. Intel had tablets running MeeGo OS. HTC has their tablet, albeit behind glass. Of all of these, Motorola's tablet was the one that had the most polish and refinement--it is clearly ready for the marketplace.
Each manufacturer feels pressure to get tablets in the market. Apple has everyone playing catch-up. Some companies clearly rushed concept tablets into production where as others, like Motorola, took their time and did it right. Even though the Xoom is not perfect, it has enough polish that most users will not know the subtle issues with the design. All they will see is a nice piece of hardware and an operating system that fits the tablet.
